Paper

Paper is a widely utilized traditional Biodegradable material packaging material. Its raw materials predominantly come from plant fibers, with common sources being wood, bamboo, reeds, and hemp, etc.

Characteristics of Paper

Printability

The surface of paper has a certain degree of roughness and absorptivity, allowing it to adhere to ink well. Consequently, it possesses excellent printability.

Flexibility

It has a certain degree of flexibility and can be folded, curled, etc. according to specific needs.

Air Permeability

There are numerous tiny pores inside the paper, enabling air to circulate within it. It has good air permeability, and this characteristic makes it more suitable for certain packaging applications that require air permeability, such as bread paper bags in food packaging.

Biodegradability

Paper is a natural compostable material. In the natural environment, under the action of microorganisms, it can gradually decompose into carbon dioxide, water, and other organic substances, and finally return to nature, having a relatively small long-term impact on the environment.

Polylactic Acid (PLA)

Polylactic acid is a new type of bio-based compostable and degradable plastic that has attracted significant attention in the environmental protection field in recent years.

Raw Materials and Manufacturing Processes of PLA

The raw materials of PLA mainly originate from renewable biomass resources such as starch-based crops like corn, sugarcane, and cassava. First, the starch in these crops is extracted and then converted into lactic acid through a series of biochemical processes such as fermentation. Subsequently, the lactic acid is polymerized into polylactic acid through a chemical polymerization reaction.

Characteristics of PLA

Biodegradability

The most prominent characteristic of PLA is its biodegradability under specific environmental conditions (such as in a composting environment). Under suitable conditions of temperature, humidity, and the presence of microorganisms, PLA can gradually decompose into harmless substances such as carbon dioxide and water within a few months to a few years, which is in sharp contrast to traditional non-degradable plastics and significantly reduces the long-term impact on the environment.

Mechanical Properties

It has relatively good mechanical properties, including certain tensile strength, bending strength, and impact strength, etc. It can meet the basic packaging and usage requirements of some products and can withstand certain external forces without breaking easily.

Transparency

Some PLA products have good transparency that can be compared with that of traditional transparent plastics (such as polyethylene terephthalate, PET). This makes it have application potential in some products that require transparent packaging, such as food and cosmetics.

Thermal Properties

The thermal properties of PLA are relatively special. Its glass transition temperature and melting point are relatively low, which means that it may soften and deform under high-temperature conditions. However, through appropriate modification treatments, its thermal stability can be improved so that it can be used in a wider temperature range.

Applications of PLA

In the packaging industry, it is widely used and can be used to manufacture various packaging products, such as food packaging (such as plastic wrap, packaging bags, etc.), daily necessities packaging (such as shampoo bottles, bathing lotion bottles, etc.), and medical packaging (such as drug packaging, medical device packaging, etc.). It can not only meet the basic functional requirements of packaging but also reflect the environmental protection attributes.
